Research

My research is focused on the metal halide perovskite materials and their nanostructures for solar and optoelectronic applications.

The remarkable performance of lead halide perovskites in solar cells can be attributed to the long carrier lifetimes and low non-radiative recombination rates, the same physical properties that are ideal for semiconductor lasers. We first report new insights on the crystal growth of the perovskite nanomaterials and the solution growth of single-crystal nanowires, nanorods, and nanoplates of methylammonium lead halide perovskites and other cation- and/or anion-substituted perovskite alloys via a dissolution-recrystallization pathway from lead precursor films coated on substrates. In collaboration with XYZ group at Columbia University, we show room temperature and wavelength tunable lasing from single-crystal methylammonium lead halide perovskite nanowires with very low lasing thresholds (~ 102 nJ/cm2) and high quality factors (Q  ~ 3600). Kinetic analysis based on time-resolved photoluminescence reveals little charge carrier trapping in these single crystal nanowires and gives estimated lasing quantum yields approaching 100%. Furthermore, we develop the growth of single-crystal nanowire of formamidinium lead halide perovskites and their stabilized alloys with methylammonium lead halide perovskites. The nanowire lasers of formamidinium lead halide perovskites show much enhanced photostability and display durable lasing under ~6×108 shots of sustained illumination of 402 nm pulsed laser excitation (150 fs, 250 kHz) at room temperature. Such lasing performance, coupled with facile solution phase growth of single crystal nanowires and broad tunability of emission color from 490 nm to 824 nm using different stoichiometry, makes lead halide perovskites ideal materials for the development of nano-photonics and optoelectronic devices, in parallel with the rapid development in photovoltaic technology from the same materials.
